Can I use Google Maps to add Favorites to my Garmin device?

Yes! Find it with Google Maps; get there with Garmin.

The Send to GPS service allows you to search for any business address and transfer it from the Google Maps website to your Garmin device via its USB connection. The point will be saved as one of your Favorites, and you can navigate to it or view it on a map just like any other Favorite.

You can send business addresses to your Garmin device from the following countries:
Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States.

Using your Garmin with Google Maps

What you’ll need:

A Garmin Personal Navigation Device such as a nüvi or a StreetPilot
A personal computer running Windows (XP, 2000, Vista) or Mac OS X v10.4 or higher
A USB cable to connect your Garmin device to your computer
One of the following browsers:

On a Windows PC

Internet Explorer version 6.0+
Firefox 1.5+

On a Mac

Firefox 2.0+
Safari 2.0+

How to use the service:

Click Find businesses in Google Maps and type the ‘what’ and ‘where’ (e.g. “barbecue” in “Olathe, KS”).
Once you find a business, click the Send link in the bar at the top-right corner of the screen.
Click the GPS tab in the ‘Send to’ window.
From the “Make” drop down list, select Garmin.
From the ‘Include’ drop-down menu, select the address you want to send and press the Send to GPS button.

Note: Make sure your Garmin device is connected to your computer in order to receive the new address.

Troubleshooting

Common error messages:

No Garmin GPS devices were found.
Please connect your device to your computer and scan again.
The fix: Your Garmin device is not connected to the USB port of your computer. Connect your device and hit the Scan Again button.

The fix: Follow the link in the error message to install the Garmin Communicator plugin. You may have to return to Google maps and repeat steps 1 – 5 above.
